Why do pro golfers show the ball after they take it out of the hole?

They're really not showing the ball....they're typically "waving" to the crowd to ackowledge the applause and cheers they are receiving after having made their putt. Just showing their appreciation for the fan support is all. Just the same as tugging on their cap or visor when they're announced on the tee.
